A Guide to Interpreting Your Vehicle's Warning Lights!

Every driver should be aware of the various warning lights that might pop up throughout your travels. It's important to understand what everything means and what icons stand for what to help you determine what the problem is. Not only that but interpreting your vehicle's warning lights is also a great way to learn more about the inner-workings of your car so that you could potentially fix the problem yourself instead of spending money at the dealership. Let's take a look at some common warning lights that every driver should be aware of:

  • Check Engine - Your check engine is light is one of the most common indicators and probably the most familiar to you. When you see this pop up on your dashboard, you know something is operating incorrectly in your engine but doesn’t necessarily mean there is an emergency at hand.
  • Coolant Temperature Warning - Indicated by a small thermometer icon, your coolant temperature warning only lights up when there is a problem with the cooling system. Things to look out for are your engine overheating and steam coming from inside the engine bay. If you notice either of these things, it's advised that you turn off the car and wait to continue driving it until it is fixed.
  • Tire Pressure Warning Light - Your tires are what help keep you grounded and in control when you need it most. Usually depicted by a tire or wheel on your dashboard, this warning sign indicates that your tires might need to be refilled with air. Anytime you see this light, stop what you are doing and check your tire pressure, looking for the nearest gas station or service facility to get some more air.
  • Electrical System Fault - If you see a small battery icon illuminate on your dashboard, then you know there's a problem with your electrical system. Sometimes this means that your battery is dying or needs to be charged, but it could also indicate that there's a faulty wire or disconnect somewhere else within the vehicle.
  • Low Engine Oil - Indicated by a red oil can, the low engine oil light tells you that there is a problem with the oil system. It could be that your oil is running low and needs to be changed, but it could also highlight a problem with your oil pump and or oil filter.
